There are 14 foam latex injected puppet characters in the Diamond Cutter, which is a shitload for a short animated film!!
The puppets were constructed with full ball and socket armatures then foam latex mould injected. The latex gives an organic feel to the puppets and allows for 'springback' which means the puppets retain their shape throughout the animation process. The ball and socket armatures give them a precise bone structure enabling smoother and more direct animation.
Each character was first sculptured in roma clay, an armature was hand made then a plaster mould was made and foam latex was injected around the armature. The puppets were then hand painted with a special flexible paint.
Special magnets were placed in the puppets feet, and sheet metal was used as a base in the sets, so that the models were able to balance...if only the little bastards could have moved themselves! |
